Vancouver Film School Offers $60,000 in Scholarships to Canadian High School Students
Competition for Aspiring, Passionate Artists Extended Nationwide
Vancouver, BC - Vancouver Film School (VFS), Canada’s premier post-secondary entertainment arts institution, today announced that it will award three full-tuition scholarships, valued at approximately $20,000 each, to the brightest, most passionate aspiring artists coming out of Canadian high schools. The 2009 Cross-Canada High School Scholarship Competition will enable three graduating high school students to experience the one-year Foundation Visual Art & Design program at VFS.
This marks the first time that VFS has opened its High School Scholarship Competition to all of Canada, encouraging and recognizing talent, creativity, discipline, and focus in young and emerging artists nationwide.
Foundation Visual Art & Design at VFS is a multidisciplinary program which will provide the scholarship winners with a strong educational grounding in traditional arts and modern visual media spanning film, animation, and design, allowing them to explore and discover their artistry. It also serves as a vital stepping stone to other acclaimed VFS programs, like Animation & Visual Effects, Digital Design, and Film Production.
“Students coming into Foundation can expect a lot of different courses designed to challenge their notion of who they are as artists,” says Ted Jones, Head of Foundation Visual Art & Design at VFS. “We give the student a taste of many different disciplines and, in the process, the student can make very grounded decisions with respect to their career path. And, as with any rigorous educational experience, the student grows and evolves as a human being.”
As part of their application, students are invited to submit a portfolio that best illustrates their artistic vision. Applications are open and will be accepted until May 29, 2009. The three winners will be announced in June 2009.

To help spread the word, VFS will be kicking off a national roadshow tour in early April, with stops in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Victoria, and Vancouver. The information sessions will provide prospective students with an overview of VFS’s 13 programs, a showcase of award-winning student work, and an exclusive chance to meet VFS’s Director of Admissions, who is also one of the judges on the scholarship judging committee.
