Recently
released from prison after serving a two-year sentence for drug
possession, Dory Roque, a thirty year-old African American woman, returns
home to her small town in Louisiana. During her time away hurricane
Katrina struck her coastal community hard. Although she was aware of the
storm's damage, she is stunned by the extent of devastation before her.
Estranged from her community and abandoned by her family, Dory is alone in
this frightening new world. Rendered homeless by the hurricane, her
relatives relocated to Texas with no plans to return and no desire to help
her restore the property or her self-esteem.
As Dory begins digging through the pieces of her shattered life she
quickly realizes the destruction caused by the hurricane pales in
comparison to the emotional storms she must now overcome. Haunted by the
sins of her past, Dory's worst nightmare materializes when she must
confront the fact that her negligence as a mother led to the accidental
death of her toddler son.
As she battles demons and struggles to rebuild some semblance of a life,
Dory finds unexpected compassion and help from her mysterious neighbor
Sean. Unbeknownst to her, Sean was the driver of the vehicle that hit her
son. Consumed by guilt and longing for redemption, Sean remained behind in
this ghost town tending to the grave of Dory's son while she served time
for her crime.
As fate brings these two strangers together again, an unlikely friendship
is forged. When Dory is confronted with the truth about Sean and her own
shortcomings she faces the biggest challenge of her life: Can she summon
the courage to forgive herself as well as the man who killed her son?
