Peter breaks
off a relationship with his girlfriend to spend more time with his son,
Danny. After eight years of being a solo parent, Peter must focus on the
biggest event in his life: saving Danny from a genetic kidney disease by
donating a kidney.
As the day for surgery quickly approaches, Danny becomes overwhelmed by
thoughts of dying. Peter’s own fears as a father do little to reassure
Danny that everything will be okay. It seems that the only comfort to
Danny during his time of distress are thoughts of his absent mother
someone who’s only regarded by Peter with elusive references.
When Peter tries to cheer up Danny by offering a vacation to anywhere on
the globe where Danny’s finger randomly selects, it only backfires; when
Danny selects China three times in a row, Peter refuses, stating that
China is too far. But when Danny confronts him, and persists with his
desire to go to China, Peter blows up, and swipes the globe onto the
floor.
After the surgery, Xiao Mei, Peter’s estranged wife living in China,
enters Peter and Danny’s lives, by tracking them down through a private
investigator a mysterious man with binoculars. When Danny meets Xiao Mei,
he learns for the first time that his mother is still alive, and that he
is part Chinese.
Old emotions become rekindled, as Xiao Mei finds out that Peter left China
with Danny because of her decision to live with her sick father, and
because of the way her parents treated him and Danny. While Xiao Mei feels
Peter blames her for Danny’s illness, since she is the carrier of the
kidney disease the genetic missing link that she inherited from her
father.
Once Peter sees how happy Danny is in his estranged mother’s arms, and
realizes that Xiao Mei can bring new dimension to their lives a family
he makes a decision to take Danny back to China her, and face a history
that tore them apart.
