Amos Ross is a
quiet kid. He doesn’t pull pigtails, he always does his homework, and he
can’t play marbles. The girls don’t notice him. But that is about to
change. He has a foolproof plan to get the attention of the cute Dawn
Campbell; he brings his grandfather’s championship marbles shooter to show
and tell. His plan works all too well, as his birthright catches the eye
of the schoolyard marbles champ and big bully, Slater. When Slater beats
him up and takes his marble, Amos has no choice but to figure a way to get
his birthright back. His friend Jason, a former champion himself who
suffered a career ending thumb injury, convinces him that the only way he
can reclaim his honor is to beat Slater in next month’s schoolwide marbles
tournament. Along the way, Amos learns about his past, confronts the
present, and takes control of his future. When he forgoes the tournament
and challenges Slater to a duel, it throws the schoolyard into a frenzy.
Most people don’t think he has what it takes, but he doesn’t care about
most people. He knows that when you play for keeps and win... you’re a
champion.
