Tommy is an
innocent kid with a mother who is suffering from cancer. In order to ease
the pain, his father asks Tommy to buy drugs from an old friend--someone
the father wants nothing to do with. When Tommy arrives he finds Strom, a
curmudgeon with a stump for a leg, courtesy of the Vietnam war. Tommy
tells Strom who he is and his circumstances. Strom is surprised to learn
who Tommy is. Strom proceeds to intimidate Tommy by degrading him into
cleaning his stump in exchange for the drugs. Tommy ends up getting the
drugs after a weak attempt at pleasing Strom, but only after finding out
the reason his father avoids Strom: Tommy's mother was involved with Strom
and left him for his father. As a result Strom, broken-hearted, joined the
army and has led a regretful life thus far.
