Interview

I knew I wanted to be a screenwriter.......

I was always a writer, since age about age nine. When I started acting and reading the awful scripts and sides, I thought, "Hey, why don't I try one of these?!"

I know I've succeeded.......

When I've been produced.

My inspiration to write FLAGSTONE.......

Reading, my father and the academic schools I attended. Also my curiosity with language and words, how it/they can be manipulated.

FilmMakers Magazine: What inspired you to write?

Heidi Morrell: Reading, my father and the academic schools I attended. Also my curiosity with language and words, how it/they can be manipulated.

FilmMakers Magazine: What did you do to prepare yourself to write your script?

Heidi Morrell: Studied some research and made an outline.

FilmMakers Magazine: Is this your first script and how long did it take you to write FLAGSTONE?

Heidi Morrell: Not my first script; the rough draft took about five weeks. Rewrites another three or four months.

FilmMakers Magazine: Do you have a set routine, place and time management for writing?

Heidi Morrell: I write in my home office from about 3-7pm.

FilmMakers Magazine: Do you believe screenplay contests are important for aspiring screenwriters and why?

Heidi Morrell: Contests are important because each one teaches the value and necessity of rewriting! This may be an agonizing process, when the contestant doesn't place at all over and over. Then comes the realization, "Wait a minute, maybe I need to change the pacing or the likeability of my main character!"

FilmMakers Magazine:
What influenced you to enter the American Gem Short Script Competition?

Heidi Morrell: A need to find a contest that takes shorts, AND the word literary in the overall title of your group. I have a literary style, I believe.

FilmMakers Magazine: What script would you urge aspiring writers to read and why?

Heidi Morrell: Body Heat - It's exciting and thrilling and has gorgeous set pieces. Because it was written and directed by the same man, Lawrence Kasdan. The script is a masterpiece of sexual tension and intrigue!

FilmMakers Magazine: Beside screenwriting what are you passionate about and why?

Heidi Morrell: Animals and the environment. Now more than ever we're seeing the finite limits of resources. We're seeing flooding, killer tornados, rogue weather and glacial melting. The corporate world doesn't care about the common man. Need I mention the Gulf...?

FilmMakers Magazine: Who is your favorite Screenwriter and Why?

Heidi Morrell: William Goldman - among others... He's just so well rounded a writer. He's funny and political, adventurous and sublime. Golding knows how to create characters that are multi faceted, human, humorous and that stand the test of time,

FilmMakers Magazine: Name the director you would love to work with and why?

Heidi Morrell: I have a great action fantasy feature script that I feel Peter Jackson would want to do after his Hobbit outing! So yeah. Also the late Anthony Minghella, would've loved to work with him and John Hughes, because of their lovely portraits and wrenching emotional conflicts. Cameron Crowe. You get the idea.

FilmMakers Magazine: Name the actor you would love to work with and why?

Heidi Morrell: Matt Damon because he has a great range and never over acts.

FilmMakers Magazine: Any tips and things learned along the way to pass on to others?

Heidi Morrell: Don't give up. Have someone read your script aloud. Read more books and travel.

FilmMakers Magazine: What's next for you?

Heidi Morrell: More polishing of my rom com script and working on my new book manuscript.

FilmMakers Magazine: Where will you be five years from now?

Heidi Morrell: Produced and published........who knows? I'd like to direct a feature!
