Logline

Hard bitten salesman Miley Rattigan has given his all to his Boston bargain basement store going with his incumbent ex-wife. An offer to good to be true is made by a rich, beautiful heiress, but Miley had to swallow his pride to work for...a woman!

Synopsis: Miley Rattigan's store is financially on its knees. He wants 'out' from the loan with his ex-wife Rita, while she doesn't understand the first thing about business. Rita still carries a torch for Miley but he isn't interested any more. Hugh, one of the regulars is too wrapped up in his own world to see a way through, and he doesn't realize another store regular Laura, a literature student really likes him. Gormless store man Oscar struggles with the basics of life and working in the store.
It seems Miley's salesman prowess has departed when in walks Esther - Lady Avondale, a 'Boston Brahmin' widow of an English Lord. Cool and sexy, Miley is drawn to her, and gives his salesman charm one last go. Esther, who looks out of place in the store, is smelling a scarf, musty and dusty it brings back memories for her. Miley chats about his fierce Irish-American loyalties and how he defended his store from the Beacon Hill developers. They smell the scarf together, a tender moment of romance and reminiscence. Esther looks around and says she'll buy it. Thinking it's about the scarf, Miley offers it to her free as a present. However Esther means that she'll buy the store!

Miley is shocked and angry. How dare this woman! Yes woman waltz into his store, fur coat, glamorous with money to burn just turn around and buy his store, after all the hard graft he put in, with his dumb dumb ex-wife, and she threatens to take that all away. Esther knows all about him, how he started out. Her Daddy was the same, he had a store just like this in the eighties. Esther had happy memories working there while she studied business at Harvard. But when she came back, her Daddy made it big and turned it into a department store in Copley Plaza. He 'sold out' in Miley's eyes. Esther taunts Miley about his austere teen-age-hood and he taunts her back. This turns into the most childish scuffle while they play at attaching each other with mops, brooms and toilet seats from the shop.

In walks Laura. Determined to prove to Hugh that she's no 'shrinking violet' she brings peace to the feuding couple. She takes them to the store room. Hugh doesn't even acknowledge Laura's skills and she storms off. Esther and Miley make up, and sign a deal on a serviette to save the store. Miley thinks she's bought the store outright. At least he won't have to work for her and he can move on from Rita. Oscar noticed the romantic atmosphere. He can't voice with it and tidies the store instead.

Miley invites Esther to a friendly basement bar in Beacon Street when he gets a shock. He reads the serviette. Esther lied! Esther asks Miley what will he now do for her. Miley thinks he should be asking her that question! Miley playfully strangles Esther with the scarf.
