Biography

Gene Roy Gwynne

Studied under Field, Freeman, Sager and others while attending classes, seminars, and workshops sponsored by the AFI, and the USC Television And Cinema Alumni Association, among others. Optioned once and had representation in the past. Currently without representation. Not a WGA member.

This script is an updated and beefed up version of a script that was optioned by Paulette Breen Productions in 1996; the premise then being mobile phones. We were in final negotiations with ABC, when the network was acquired by Disney, and all projects were put on indefinite hiatus. As phone communications was rapidly advancing toward cell phones, I abandoned the script to concentrate on other projects.

Logline

Two estranged lovers, now police detectives, pursue a sociopath monitoring cordless phone conversations. Think Spencer Tracy and Kathrine Hepburn doing Die Hard.

Synopsis: A sociopath preys upon the city, weaving a web of rape, robbery, blackmail, and murder. His nemesis is in the form of two police detectives, Karl Rider and Edith Harris, two estranged lovers of years past now thrust together on special assignment to discover a link among a series of similar but unrelated crimes. Edith's procedural methods immediately clash with Karl's independent and intuitive style of operation, his suspicion being the special assignment is to determine, then cover up a possible police
connection associated with the crimes.

The brunt of the investigation falls upon Edith as Karl, against orders, maintains his connections with Robbery/Homicide in an investigation of drug related robberies that have escalated to murder. When a snitch of Karl's is murdered, he goes rogue, setting the perpetrator up for assassination. Edith is aghast upon discovering his actions.

Old flames are rekindled as Karl and Edith work together. Edith's current lover, Kevin, is aware of the previous relationship between Karl and Edith, and offers Edith marriage, but at the expense of her career.

Karl feels there is a connection between the drug/murder cases and those under special assignment. A link is determined among all the crimes to the tapping of cordless phones through the use of scanners. Due to the untraceable, undetectable nature of this type of surveillance, Karl and Edith, working through the police department, set up a sting operation; working as a team, using cordless phones while portraying individuals ripe for victimization. The antagonist makes contact, but the sting goes sour due to the intervention of an adversary of Karl's who works on the police force. This confirms Karl's suspicion of police involvement.

The antagonist witnesses the botched sting, recognizing it as a police action. Enraged, he uses his power of surveillance to track down and murder a beautiful young intern who assisted Karl and Edith with the operation.

Karl and Edith become of one mind, launching a second sting independent of department knowledge. With the aid of a high-tech, former military CID officer, they place their lives and careers on the line, in what becomes a Die Hard duel to the death.
